NVIDIA Shield Review - The best Android Device for gaming yet

WOW! said an Itech employee. it was opened by an Itech Employee in Glorietta. She had never seen one before and this unit was only sold in their head office in Greenhills. I held the unit and was surprised how solid the device is. Your paying extra for the premium looks and feel. Device is priced at 16k here in the Philippines but if you can wait or purchase abroad you can get the device at 13k. For those who do not know what an NVIDIA Shield is, the device was made by NVIDIA primarily for streaming PC games to this monster handheld. Top 2 use is for Android games and emulators so that those touch controlled games can now be played using proper gamepad.

Design and Form Factor

The Device is colossal, its huge, heavy and solid but still it feels comfortable when held by small or huge hand gamers. The controller feels and looks like an xbox 360 controller. The 5 inch screen is sharp at 441 ppi I believe so those Tegra and PC games looks pretty good even downscaled on this device. There's a big air ventilation on the back of the device which make the device look like a back of you PC, at the back is also the HDMI port MMC, Triggers, and the 3mm audio jacl. It has two f**king loud speakers that makes my external mini speakers sound weak. At the bottom of the device is another vent to cool down the device. The bottom back is plastic which makes it prone to scratches but the grip part is rubber which is quite comfy.

Dropping the shield will 60% break the device because of its weight. Its solid and heavy but I dont think it would survive a fall more than 5 meters from the top.

Screen is revealed by moving it upward and that flex will survive more than 100,000 flexes for its really solid and does not squeak unlike the one's found on a 3DS. It wont wiggle I promise you that and you can adjust the angle which ever your comfortable with unlike again on the 3DS.

You can customize the Silver part and put another TAG as what they call's it but it cost way too much and I wont recommend that unless the price goes down to $10.00(currently at $9.99).

The buttons feels like the one's in xbox 360 and one of the best controllers I've used. Better than PS3 Sixaxis Controller.

Performance

All I can say is NVIDIA Shield is a BEAST. It's on par with current smartphones and even outperformed the new Galaxy Note 3. For me this is the best Device to play Droid games to date. Not just because it has a built in controller but for its performance as well.

Games and Applications

There are tons of Android games out there. But its awkward to play touch screen games on that screen but hey! It's tolerable because the screen wont be pushed so much even if pushed vigorously while playing. Battery life gets a wooping 11 hours for web browsing, 11 hours for PC remote play. 8-10 hours for droid gaming and 8-6 hours for tegra games. Typing is still good compared to typing on PSVITA. Its much more comfortable and I have used it to chat friends dozen of times which feels natural and its like typing on a smartphone on landscape mode.

There are lots of Emulators compatible with the shield as well. I think every emulator for droids supports the device which make this Device the best one to use for retro gaming. Because of the devices' GPU the highest setting can be made for every emulator can be set for best retro experience making some games look sharper and in HD.

There's a built in GAME MAPPER software which lets you map game controls for much better gaming experience for most android games. Not everything is compatible though, mapping on some games still doesnt work well and NVIDIA is working on some issues and be applying patches sometime soon.

The highlight of the Device, which I haven't used yet, is its PC streaming capability. It requires an NVIDIA video card which cost 5k for the minimum requirement and for the full PC you need to dish out 20,000 -_- bummer. But if you have the cash to spend or already have that Luxurious PC then you can experience PC games while on your bed or your toilet perhaps.

Available only on GAMEONEGADGET or Itech at 15,995 and currently out of stock I guess. You may order online for $250 and have it shipped here but prepare for the taxes and shipping fees.

To wrap it up, With most Vita games I'm waiting for are still in development or Delayed and 3DS games still feels kiddie for my taste. I'm sticking with Retro and Droid games for now on my Shield. Its the best device for Android gaming to date. :)
