[PSVITA] Yomawari: Midnight Shadows Review

It’s scare month so it's a perfect time for scary games. You'd be wondering if there is still something to play for the PS Vita well, yeah! We still have a few more games to come and for November we have Demon Gaze II and Yomawari: Midnight Shadows.

Yomawari: Midnight Shadows is a sequel to Yomawari: Night Alone and is a survival horror game released for PS4, PS Vita and Steam. I have not played the first one but I am warning you, The graphics maybe cute, but the cuteness won’t save you for not being scared. The ghosts/Monsters here were inspired by Japanese folklores so expect a Sadako like creature running for you.

You control two cute girls Yui and Haru which both got separated after watching fireworks in their town. You'll control Haru most of the time as you find your friend Yui but certain events of the game will make you control Yui so Haru would know where to look for her next. With her flashlight, you navigate the town during night time to search for Yui and don't even ask me why she chose to search during the night. The whole town is haunted and you'll find ghosts/Monsters everywhere.

You don’t have weapons here so that would make things scarier. You just run from the ghosts/Monsters, distract them by throwing something at them or hiding from them. Hiding will just show your character and a red spot with a heartbeat sound effect telling you that a specific ghosts is near or already passed by you. Its damn scary considering that your stamina, yeah you have stamina hear, depletes faster when ghosts/Monsters are around. There are various ways to get pass this shadowy creatures and there's a hint scattered all over the town on how to get pass them.

What happens when a Shadow(let's call the monsters Shadows shall we?) catches you? Well its game over and you get back to the save spot you last saved. You still retain the items you've gathered. It's just that, the characters here are not running really fast and you need to traverse the scary town again in case the last save point was really far away. Anyway, there are lots of save point scattered so just save and save when you have time. You may also use those spots to fast travel to a location.

As you play the game though, everything becomes predictable. You either hide, run and distract the enemy. So that’s it there are other ways but you'll figure it out for sure but you'd know figure it out for sure. The shadows wont outsmart you the whole time. It's just that you become more cautious as to what not to approach and when not to run.

For the sound, I must say its damn scary especially when you're on headset which I advise you do since this will enhance the experience better. I am surprised, That the simple sound effects brings tremendous fear to players.

Well, I must say that the developers did a great job in bringing jump scare to players. It's not something you'd be playing for a long while though. The game is short and I am not sure if the bundle would be released for the PS4. If you've not played both games. I'd recommend this for the trophy.

Pros:
  • A scary game experience

Cons:
  • It's short
  • Gets predictable overtime

Overall 3.5/5
